What is Amanita Pantherina? Amanita pantherina var. pantherina is the rarest and most potent kind of Amanita "Muscaria" mushroom. This is because it contains highest amount of the psychedelic chemical muscamol.  You won't find many stores with them in stock mainly because they are too difficult to accurately identify them, being too easily confused with different "unknown" mushrooms.  The difference in the appearance is that most Amanitas have a Red or Orange-ish top cap with white speckles in them. Whereas Pantherina Amanitas usually have a Dark Grey Brown cap but colors can be lighter which is where they become mis-identified by amateurs.  Occasionally you will find a couple of  them mixed in with a purchased container of mixed variety amanitas. When you order containers of Amanita mushrooms from online vendors they are usually a mixed variety of Amanita mushrooms unless they specifically tell you the exact name of the specific type of Amanita they will be sending.   There are no "Washington State Grade A" type variety of pantherina. Amanita pantherina is a mushroom of European origin . Unless you personally pick, collect, and test mushrooms yourself and your research is based mostly in Europe, your best chance to obtain your own Panther Caps is to hope some are included in your order of mixed Amanitas.  Even when mushrooms are dried you can still generally identify their main characteristics, most notably the top skin color of the cap of the mushroom.
